Imagine this: you step into a world of colour where historic masterpieces adorn the walls, giant crayons lean up in corners and beluga whales rise from the floor – all crafted from thousands of LEGO® bricks. This is what you can expect at The Art of the Brick, a highly anticipated exhibition coming to The Headrow building in Leeds city centre on August 8. The art-filled experience has not only delighted the crowds in over 100 cities, including London, Washington DC, Milan and Paris, but it was also named as one of CNN’s ‘must-see’ exhibitions, so you’ll want to make sure it’s on your list this summer.
What can you expect to see at Art of the Brick?
Do you have a LEGO® Millenium Falcon sitting pride of place on your shelf? Treasure fond memories of building LEGO® castles with your kid? Or maybe your ideal Valentines is receiving a LEGO® bouquet from your loved one? You’ll feel right at home at the incredible Art of The Brick exhibition, filled with over 70 works and sculptures created by Nathan Sawaya. The former Wall Street lawyer turned award-winning contemporary artist has an extensive collection of pieces spanning his career, and you’ll be able to feast your eyes on everything from vibrant Chilean flamingos to striking explorations of the human condition.
The Art of the Brick Exhibition also dives into the rich history of art, with fascinating LEGO®-crafted reimaginings of famous pieces such as Hokusai’s ‘The Great Wave’, Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ and Edvard Munch’s haunting ‘The Scream’. With no detail spared these three-dimensional pieces bring the works of art to life in an entirely new way. You’ll also be able to step into the wilderness, with a marvellous menagerie of creatures including African elephants, an Arctic fox, a Polar Bear with her adorable cub and many more.
If all the wondrous works get you inspired you’ll be able to flex your own LEGO®-building skills in their play and build area – just make sure you are wearing shoes to avoid the perilous possibility of stepping on a brick. There’s also a gift shop where you can get your hands on some exclusive items and sets, so you can keep the creativity flowing all the way home.
